Internet Careers Outlook
New technologies are making Internet connections faster and easier. Cable modem has remained the dominant access mode in the United States through the mid-2000s, but DSL and wireless broadband are gaining in popularity. As with all computer technology, it is expected that DSL and wireless broadband will replace cable modem as the technology is refined and becomes less expensive.
The Internet offers a huge variety of career options. Internet growth will increase employment opportunities with computer and network hardware suppliers, access providers, software companies, Internet consulting firms, and e-commerce developers. There is a continuing need for skilled computer science workers and a rapidly growing market for designers and managers who can combine Internet savvy and know-how with their ability to create, produce, and manage Web content. Employers report difficulty finding experienced IT (information technology) staff, and Webmasters are also in demand.
Internet companies, nicknamed dot-coms, have gone through a period of sharp decline after rapid growth in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Despite this downturn, experts predict that the dot-com industry will gradually rebound in the next few years, although job security with any one firm may be uncertain. Mergers, downsizing, business failures, and the ever-changing technology of this industry mean that there may be some instability regarding long-term employment with any one firm. Nevertheless, workers who keep current with technology and who are willing to learn and adapt will be in strong demand.
