Photography Careers Outlook
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment of photographers is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. The demand for photographs is expected to increase during that period, but the business of photography is now and will remain extremely competitive. There are far more people who want to be photographers than there are positions available. Only those individuals with the best skills, training, and business acumen are likely to succeed in the field as salaried workers or independent contractors.
Photography students need to study digital processes or they will be at a disadvantage in the job market when they graduate. Study of traditional photography is still recommended, but because film-based photographs are commonly scanned, it is also necessary to study digital photography.
Employment in the newspaper industry is expected to grow more slowly than the average, which will affect jobs for print photographers. There should be jobs available for photographers in news and wire services, particularly those who are knowledgeable in digital processes. Digital images will also be in demand by book, magazine, and journal publishers, and Internet businesses.
Employment is expected to decline for photographic equipment repairers and photo processing workers, due to the move toward digital processes.
